I was born on June 5, 1983 in Salt Lake City, Utah to the most wonderful parents ever. I was the first child for my parents. I have lived in Tooele my whole life, it use to be a very small town, not anymore. When I was two years old my parents divorced, and my mom and I moved into my grandparents house for a while. Obviously I do not remember much of this time beings I was two years old. My mom met a guy and got married to him when I was three years old, this was one of the best things to happen to me in my life, my step dad better known as "dad" is the most incredible person I have ever met, not once in my 23 years of knowing him has he ever made me feel anything other than his own. My real dad also remaried but I am not sure when that happened.
Just after my mom got married we moved to a new house on the west side of Tooele, thats where I met a kid that lived across the street, he and I became best friends really quick, we were inspeperable, there is not anywhere that one of us went that the other didn't follow. In fact when we started school and had different kindergarten teachers we thought our lives were over. In July of 1987 I got my first sibling, my dad and his wife had a little girl. Just seven months later I got my second sibling in February of 1988 my mom and her husband had me a brother. I was very excited to have a little brother, unfortunatley he had some major health problems when he was little, he had lung disease and asthma so he spent a lot of time in the hospital for his first 5-6 years. When he was doing well and not in the hospital he would often tag along with me and my friend. I of course love my sister but only seeing here four days a month made it so we were not real close growing up. In 1990 I got my third and last sibling, my mom had another baby boy. Us three boys grew up close, of course we seemed to always fight, but thats what brothers are for right?
I grew up like most kids do, playing, having fun and causing trouble. My life was pretty normal and great until 1998. 1998 was a horrible year for me, my grandma (dad's mom) who I was very close to and was a very sweet lady passed away in March. As if that wasnt already a bad enough year three months later my dad passed away from cancer. It is very hard for a teenage boy to live without his dad. The only way I got through it all is my step dad, we were already close at this point, but we grew even closer.
While in high school I was given the opportunity to do and internship with Tooele County Sheriff's Office Communications Center. This later becomes one of the best things to happen to me. I graduated high school in 2001, I graduated six months early and went to work for a construction company building houses, this only lasted about a month, I hated it! I then went to work for a newspaper printing company, and I have never seen a company who treated their employees so bad.
While I was working the job's that I hated I was contacted by the Sheriff's office. They informed me that one of the dispatchers were called to active duty due to 9-11. They asked me if I would like to come to work for them as a temporary employee, and of course I said yes. At this time my grandparents took everybody to Hawaii for vacation, this is one of the best vacations I have ever had, and I can not wait to go back. The day after I returned home I started working for the Sheriff's office 1-4-02.
I have worked for the sherriff's office ever since, I started as a temporary employee, and have moved up and now hold the position as sergeant of communications. In 2004 I joined the Tooele County Search and Rescue, I absolutley love it! In 2006 I decided that I needed more to do so I went to school and became an EMT, I have worked for the ambulance service in Tooele since. I think I like helping people, what do you think?
In 2007 I met who I thought was finally the right girl for me, boy was I wrong! Everything was going great, we got engaged in December. Shortly after we found out we were having a baby, this is the start of the best and worst adventure of my life. We were finally to the point of going to the ultrasound where we were supposed to find out the sex of our baby, this turned out to be one of the worst days of my life! When we were getting the ultrasound done, the tech was acting wierd, we knew that something was wrong. The doctor came in and told us that our baby was going to have birth defects, we thought this was the worse news ever! After some more tests we were praying that we could go back to only having birth defects. We were told that we were going to have a baby boy, but that he had holoprosencephaly and trisomy 13. For those of you who are saying "what the hell is that" don't feel bad thats what I said to. Holoprosencephaly is a type of cephalic disorder. This is a disorder characterized by the failure of the prosencephalon (the forebrain of the embryo) to develop. During normal development the forebrain is formed and the face begins to develop in the fifth and sixth weeks of human pregnancy. (The condition also occurs in other species, as with Cy, the Cyclops kitten.) Holoprosencephaly is caused by a failure of the embryo's forebrain to divide to form bilateral cerebral hemispheres (the left and right halves of the brain), causing defects in the development of the face and in brain structure and function. Trisomy 13 was described to us as a severe case of down syndrome.
We were told that our baby most likely pass away in the womb, but on June 20, 2008 Ethan James Dixon was born. Ethan stayed with us for 4 wonderful hours before he passed. I dont know if any of you have ever had to bury a baby but it was the hardest thing I have ever had to do and I would not wish it on anybody! Ethan, we held you in our arms for a moment, but we will hold you in our hearts forever!
Shortly after all of this happened I found out that the person who was supposed to be the love of my life had been cheating on me, needless to say I did not stay with her.
Obviously I had had the worse month of my entire life, and I admit I hit rock bottom. I had decided that life was no longer worth living, I thought that I had lost everything that was close to me, I have never been so wrong in my life. I am not proud of the next part of this, but I feel that it is a critical part of my life, the day I found out that she had been cheating on me, I lost it! I drove up one of the local canyons, and started to hike up the side hill. I was determined life was not worth living anymore. I decided to text a couple friends and my parents telling them that I loved them and that I could not handle life anymore, that turned out to be the best thing I have ever done in my life. My friends, most of which are in law enforcement, all were smart enough to know that this was a serisous situation and were able to get enough information, without me knowing it at the time, that they were able to find my truck and started hiking the hills looking for me. I thank god every day that one of my best friends Andy found me when he did. Andy was able to talk to me and eventually calm me down. When I got to the bottom of the hill, I was so emberassed to see that there were 9 officers, the sheriff, 5 of my friends and my parents waiting for me. However I then realized that there were people that cared about me.
The Sheriff was very caring of me, he sent me to a counselor, and had one of my good friends who is a deputy take me there. Ther sheriff also without me knowing gave two of my good friends and my brother in law who all work for the sheriff's office 4 days off and sent us all on a vacation. We all went to rock port and the time spent there got me back on the right track. When I got back, although I was still upset I had a different outlook on life.
Since then I have done really well for myself, I have got my own house, and a new truck. Also during that time of dealing with my son, I was promoted to Sergeant. My life is wonderful. Although this is a story of my life, I would like to tell everybody reading it, life is worth living and there is always somebody who cares about you and loves you!
So that brings us to today, my sister had her baby on February 3, 2009 so I am now a proud uncle. I am still working and loving my job. My little brother turned 21 last night, and we are going to Mesquite next weekend to celebrate, I am excited for that.
On a side note, I am still single, I have found a girl and have been talking to her for quite a while now, I am looking forward to seeing if there is anything there or not. However I am not in a hurry, I am kind of enjoying the single life, so whatever happens happens.
I would like to thank all of my family and friends for always being there for me and for making me the person I am today!
I love you all!
Take care
